SEO experiment – search engine submission
Having completed the herbal remedies site to a suitable degree, i went ahead and submitted the site to the following four search engines:
- http://submit.search.yahoo.com/ (after some time spent trying to retrieve my old login details not used for many years)
Upn submitting to google I decided to check out their webmaster tools. To my surprise, it told me the bot had already been there and indexed some pages…
It seems they must have automatically assigned their googlebot to index my page for their search rankings when i set up Google analytics for the site. That would make sense i guess, why would they wait to send their bot to a new part of the internet…
Looking over their tools and reports created about my site, it became apparent that when the bot first visited and indexed the page, it was quite early in the development process and the page had not much relevant content on it, just some basic menus and some notes to myself about SEO stuff. So as a result it seems the keywords associated with my site (according to google’s tool) are a mix of herbal remedies related words and SEO webmaster type words. Obviously this is somewhat undesirable and a lesson to wait until a basic site is ready with at least some real content before letting Google or Yahoo etc know about it. Anyhow, the effect should be limited and should dissipate quite quickly as it only visited the one page (a temporary index.html). As the bot re-indexes and as more pages are added the effect of this minor gaff should hopefully be negated…
My list of submissions also includes
http://www.dmoz.org/
http://dir.yahoo.com/
Or Google and Yahoo’s site directories respectively.
I’ll wait a little while on those ones until i have more formidable content as they are manually maintained and edited there may be a significant chance of exclusion from their listings…
