SEO experiment update…

Organic visitors have started to pick up. Although obviously still minute, this is an encouraging sign. Almost all visitors have come from google with only one exception coming from Answers.com. MSN still doesn’t rank any of the site in the first 5 pages of results, while Yahoo is now showing the front page at #13.

Google Analytics have found the site using 8 different each phrases (this excludes my own testing and visiting).

Google webmaster tools now reports that the site ranks in the top 20 for 12 different search terms, 10 of these show up on the first page.

Webmaster tools are also now reporting on external links. Before, it always just said there was no data available, even after i had linked to the site from this blog and the posts with the links had been indexed by the googlebot. I guess you can’t expect things to update and report all data instantaneously given the enormity and relative complexity of the tasks performed by google’s search.
There are 2 links on this site to HRdb, one using the link text “herbal remedies” and one with “herbal remedies db”. Google webmaster tools has reported no less than external links, all from capriciousmind.com. They have done it once each for the front page with and without the preceding “www.”, and then once each for the individual post pages. Still, Google’s toolbar has a pagerank of 0 for the site and doesn’t show any backlinks. That’s not particularly surprising, I guess the main thing to note is that the backlinks displayed from the toolbar, or by using the “link:” tag in the search box doesn’t display all links. I knew this before from looking at the baklinks and pageranks of various sites, but i still can’t really determine what they take into account when deciding which ones get displayed.

Looking over these statistics and observing which pages in particular are being featured in the results, i’m beginning to get a clear idea of what has led the site to rise in google’s rankings.

I think the main factor is the steady updates that have taken place on the site while the site has been indexed. Almost every time the googlebot has returned, there has been some change, or new pages added. This shows google that the site is active and that it is a legitimate page.

The second factor is more obvious, inbound links, limited as they are…
