SEO experiment – update…
So as i mentioned in my last post, my herbal remedies site has already been visited by the googlebot. This made me realize that Google Analytics had not been reporting the activity of its own or any other bots or crawlers. A quick web search revealed that indeed, Google Analytics does not support the tracking of bots as apparently they can’t execute the google analytics code at the bottom of each page. As a result, i will obviously have to resort to other means in order to observe when and which search engine bots visit the site. Fortunately, the stats package provided by my host (which i just discovered) covers this and so obviously i’ll be using that to retrieve the bot info for this experiment…
Anyhow, it’s interesting to note that my site has been added to Google’s search listings (actually i suppose this blog has as well seeing as i set up Analytics for it also) and now features as the 3rd result when searching for the title of the site (still yet to be revealed). However, searching for the primary keyword of the site “herbal remedies” didn’t turn it up (i only checked the first 30 pages of results, there must be an SEO tool to track that…). Hardly surprising though given that, as i mentioned in the previous, the content wasn’t up to scratch when google first visited…
I wonder how long it takes google to visit if you don’t set up google analytics?
They state on their submission page that
“We add and update new sites to our index each time we crawl the web, and we invite you to submit your URL here. We do not add all submitted URLs to our index, and we cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear.”
It sounds like they probably are pretty quick anyway and the above is just a small disclaimer to cover them when people inevitably complain that they deserve a higher ranking.
It certainly provides more cause for optimism than any of the other 3 search engines i submitted to. They all had something on their submission pages to the effect of “…it may take several weeks for…”.
So for now, i wait and observe and build content. There’s a good chance the googlebot might not be back any time soon to re-index my site, so patience might be in order for now.
