the first post…
First of all let me start by saying that a more common choice for the title for this post might have been “The inaugural post”. I felt that that title was far too obvious. Also, it seems to vaguely imply that this is the beginning of something particularly meaningful or important, or perhaps long lived. There is a good chance that this blog will prove to be none of those things.
Some site called the blog herald reports that there are over 100 million blogs in existence worldwide, that info was posted there in October 2005. I’d say that by now there are probably twice that many which have been abandoned.
Talking in broad, rough estimates, i’d say that 80% of all blogs have been abandoned or are at least very much inactive. Of the remaining 20% i’d say that probably 75% of those are basically useless or pointless and provide nothing to the average reader out there. If you think these percentages are too high, stop and think for a minute about the number of idiots who use myspace… See?
Social Networking sites and other user content driven sites have given just about anybody the ability to put content on the web. I remember the first time i created a web site (about 1996), i think i was listed 3rd on the Yahoo directory. Punching in “Duke Nukem 3d” (the topic of my site) only produced about 5 relevant results. Yahoo’s directory and search results were basically manually maintained.
The contrast between then and now is quite amazing…
While back then, only a scattered collection of nerds were creating web content; now they have taken a back seat to big corporations and the drooling masses that arrived with them. Surfing the web is now much more like a trip to the mall, there’s something for everyone and it’s all monetized… Well, maybe that’s a little simplistic and brash, but hopefully you can see what im getting at.
So with the odds stacked against me, I’ll attempt to make this blog plus various websites (details to come) a success on the web starting here in mid 2007…
