The SEO experiment begins

After spending quite a number of hours over the last couple of weeks, I’ve completed (at least in a very primitive way) and published a small php/mysql website. After having read probably hundreds of pages about how Google and other search engines determine ‘pagerank’, what features and modifications will improve it and what it takes to get your domain penalized or blacklisted (and concluding that most of the information out there is misleading), i’ve decided to try to take an empirical approach to learning and observing how it all works.

So basically here’s how it will operate…

Each week or so i will post information about:

  • Any change to the site
  • Any promotion such as creating inbound links, listing with search engines or directories etc.
  • Basic information from google analytics (just installed) about site traffic
  • The current ranking of the site for important keywords on Google, Yahoo and MSN live search
  • Anything else of significance

The site itself is a intended as a research tool for people seeking information about herbal remedies for treating various conditions. This is a topic which i’m somewhat interested in. Basically the content is created from a database of articles collected from various sources which have then been tagged with keywords, given some summary information and a score indicating how strongly they endorse the treatment.

While the site is fully functional, the content at the moment is quite limited. However, the site should be suitable to be indexed by the web bots from the search engines. It has a sound internal link structure and contains pages with relevant content and keywords.

And now for link to the site… Bearing in mind the implications of doing this from this blog post. This blog has not yet been submitted to search engines. There will be no backlink to this post or the capriciousmind.com domain. The content on this blog is not related at all to the content of the site, potentially a risky thing to do according to some, particularly as this post details information about pagerank SEO etc… Overall im not too concerned that this will have a negative impact on search rankings.

Actually, now that i think about it, it would be better for the purposes of the experiment to first list the site with the search engines and observe the results from that and then continue to observe as links are slowly added as time goes by…

So a link to the site will have to wait for a future post.

Stay tuned…
